What is the purpose to thinking in such a way that may be read by others? “we think in public” could well be the tagline for this project… and yet it’s not a commitment I’m entirely comfortable with yet. I feel there is something to be gained by sharing in-progress thought and making space for one’s notes to be read. Perhaps it may be the beginning of something greater than what one can arrive at alone. Or a transparency which reveals the means by which the ideas are made—accountability even, to a kind of (dare I say it?) rigor.

Is it an invitation to bring others on board a journey into some ideas? Or maybe a way to bring about a broader dialogue with what’s already on my mind?

what do you garner from this project?

Methods of Thinking in Public

One point that was raised with SJ was how much control I wish to exercise in how the user moves through my site. This raises questions of what gets linked to what, and the underlying structure of the graph that radiates out from this page. Of particular concern is the index page, where users might first end up and I want to give them a sampling of places to start. I’ve even seen some digital gardens that start with a single page that then branches outwards into some common nodes, with small tracks that move them in a narrow direction.

I’m not yet sure what approach I wish to take, but perhaps this is something I can start to be more deliberate about and reflect on here. Surely there are some values or design principles that could inform the approach. But I’m not sure what they are yet other than the desire to be non-linear. This would suggest multiple paths through the work is possible. Should I account for all of them? Most likely not. That’s the freedom of exploration. But we shall see as I expand the network and who looks at it.
